After a long day out in the woods, setting up camp, gathering wood, food, and water, what our bodies and minds really need is some solid rest to recuperate for the next day’s adventure. For that, the Grand Trunk Travel Pillow with Hood has been excellently designed – a foam neck brace with a soft hood that can be pulled over the eyes to create a warm and shaded environment for your head to rest.
Filed with a “viscoelastic” polyurethane foam (the same type used in Temper Pedic-style mattresses),the pillow conforms easily to your neck and head, as long as it’s room temperature. If colder than that, the pillow will be pretty stiff until your body heat warms it up a bit. This isn’t too big of an issue, even in cold climates; the foam warms up pretty quick, and holds on to the warmth to retain its conforming abilities and to keep your head and neck comfortable.
The hood is a nice addition when you’re trying to catch some Z’s in a lit area, although I was told that I look like an executioner when I have it on (maybe other colors would be better?). It would have been better if the hood was a bit longer, as it barely came to the tip of my nose. However, this may not be an issue with the product as much as it is an indication that I have a big head. Additionally, the hood had some draw strings which worked really well to cinch down the hood around my face, which kept out the light decently well.
The travel pillow does come with a stuff sack, which doesn’t pack it down incredibly small, but is useful for keeping the
fabric from snagging on other stuff. The pillow also has a neat little pocket which is just the right size to fit the stuff sack when it’s not in use. The pillow weighs in at about 12 ounces, which isn’t too bad, but is heavier than some options.
In conclusion, this is a very nice “comfort” item that is great to have if you can afford the space and weight to bring it along. Maybe not the best for an ultra light outing, but acceptable for just about anywhere else, and it’s a serious upgrade to airplane “pillows”!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go take a nap.
